Are You a High-Potential Professional?

 by Ronald E. Riggio, Ph.D
4 qualities of the best professionals and employees

Organizations put a great deal of energy and effort into identifying "high-potential" employees--those who will excel at their jobs and in their careers. High-potential employees are highly motivated, productive, and go beyond the basic requirements of their jobs. Professionals--doctors, lawyers, accountants, psychologists--can also be identified as "high potentials."

Here are the characteristics of high-potential professionals:
Motivation
High-potential professionals are self-starters. They are both extrinsically and intrinsically motivated, meaning that they are motivated both by money, but also by the satisfaction that they get in practicing their profession.

Innovation.
High-potential professionals not only work harder, but they work smarter. They are always trying to find ways to innovate, learn new techniques, and develop routines that help them to do more.

Dedication.
High potentials go above and beyond the normal job. They are good organizational citizens, helping out as mentors, and willing to take on those extra (and unpaid) duties. They are involved in service and pro-bono work, using their professional skills to help others in the community and profession.

Inspirational.
High-potential professionals lead by example. They serve as positive role models and inspiration to other professionals, particularly the young ones. They ask questions, and listen to what others have to say. They are not afraid to challenge the process if it needs it.

It is the high-potential professionals who are the heart and soul of their organizations. High potentials make their departments, offices, hospitals, and schools great places to work, and help the entire group be successful.
