Beberapa hari yang lalu, guru saya, Pak Tung Desem Waringin, mengirimkan 1 buah email yang sangat ‘menghibur’. Saat itu beliau naik salah satu maskapai penerbangan di Amerika. Ternyata budaya dan passion untuk service di perusahaan itu memang sudah langka. Mereka menghidangkan makanan dengan cara dilempar. Beliau sampai berteriak menggoda, “Please, don’t kill me”.

Ini sangat kontras dengan saat saya naik salah satu pesawat di China. Di sana saya diberikan 1 lembar form kritik dan saran. Karena memang saya orangnya blak-blakan, maka di beberapa item saya berikan penilaian kurang baik. Saya sangat kaget ketika salah satu pramugara yang masih sangat muda datang ke kursi saya. Dia menghampiri sambil membawa kertas form saya.

Research at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station has led to a patent for a new use for derivatives of DIM, or diindolylmethane, a natural compound derived from certain vegetables, to treat cancer.

Selain makna sebenarnya, frase “jalan ditempat” juga mempunyai makna kiasan. Ketika bisnis kita tidak kunjung berkembang, karir kita tidak naik-naik, atau kehidupan kita tidak juga membaik; kita menyebutnya ‘jalan ditempat’ atau ‘stagnan’. Masalahnya, setiap aspek kehidupan kita tidak selamanya berada dalam ‘mode maju’. Kadang kita harus memasuki masa-masa jalan ditempat itu. Faktanya, ‘jalan ditempat’ itu adalah salah satu bagian dari siklus kehidupan yang mesti kita jalani. Tidak peduli sudah sebaik apa usaha yang kita lakukan, kita belum juga bisa beranjak dari tempat dimana kita memulai. Tidak jarang hal itu menciutkan hati dan melemahkan motivasi kita. Tetapi, benarkah kita tidak bisa berbuat apa-apa saat memasuki periode jalan ditempat?

New Technique Identifies M. Tuberculosis Genes

For most of this century, tuberculosis, or TB, has not been considered a major disease in the United States. In the late '80s, after a century of steady decline, the number of cases of TB in the United States began to increase due to increases in immigrants from countries where TB is prevalent, homeless people in crowded conditions, the elderly and AIDS patients. Although the increase in cases has been reversed in the last several years, more than 18,000 cases of TB were reported in the United States in 1998. Worldwide, TB remains a serious health problem. The World Health Organization has estimated that one-third of the world's population is infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacterium that causes TB.

United States researchers have picked up their efforts over the past decade. One, Josephine Clark-Curtiss, Ph.D., research associate professor of biology at Washington University in St. Louis, and her colleagues have recently identified 15 M. tuberculosis genes that are expressed only when the bacteria are growing in the immune system's prime gatekeeper, a disease-fighting cell called a macrophage.

Tersenyum, betapa mudahnya hal ini dilakukan.  Hanya butuh sedetik untuk merubah bentuk bibir menjadi senyum.  Dan hanya butuh tujuh detik mempertahankan sang senyum untuk terlihat sebagai ungkapan ketulusan hati.

Tetapi kenapa hal sederhana ini jarang terlihat?  Wajah-wajah di jalan, di angkutan umum, di kantin, di kantor, bahkan di tempat wisata yang seharusnya menjadi kebun senyum, justru terlihat buram.  Kerutan-kerutan di wajah menunjukkan betapa berat beban yang harus ditanggung wajah-wajah itu.  Banyak wajah yang daerah diantara dua matanya mengkerut.  Menyeramkan dan tampak garang.  Duh... 

Senyum itu sudah hilang dari wajah banyak orang.  Entah kenapa senyum – bahkan tawa – yang selalu cerah menghiasi wajah-wajah itu dari kecil, sirna begitu saja.  Sekarang, bahkan bukan hanya wajah-wajah tua dan dewasa yang telah kehilangan senyum manis.  Wajah para remaja dan anak-anak pun telah ketularan kerutan-kerutan penuh beban itu.

Pharma Sales - An Ultimate Art of Convincing

Pharmaceutical sales is very different from other industries. The industry follows a product distribution chain to reach the actual consumer and a field force to engage medical practitioners who essentially are influencers in this process. The distribution chain links are the depots the stockists and the retailers. The sales team does not wield significant influence in this chain which interacts with the actual consumer of the produce. This line of process seems to be solely engaged in ensuring availability of the produce in the shelf. It is here that the volume is managed and there by the fund flows and profits. 

There are not much efforts taken or need realized for incentivising the retailers as against most marketing processes in many other products. On the other hand the industry goes all out to win the medical practitioners and influence the community to prescribe their produce. Even the over the counter drugs do not seem to have any aisle preferences or high end store level promotions. This manufacturer-to-consumer produce flow model with no effort to win over the actual consumer doesnt seem to exist in any other industry. Interestingly the marketing activity and the field force are all focused on winning over the influencers, the doctors in this case. 

Tips Sederhana Tingkatkan Percaya Diri

Beberapa waktu lalu Saya sempat bertemu dengan seseorang yang selalu terlihat gelisah. Iseng-iseng, Saya tanyakan mengapa dirinya  terlihat tegang dan gelisah. Jawabannya sungguh mengejutkan. Dia merasa tidak "PeDe" (Percaya Diri) dengan penampilannya. Padahal bila diperhatikan, terlihat semuanya oke banget. 

Memang kadang kala, disadari atau tidak, Kita terserang "demam panggung" terutama dalam menghadapi situasi yang spesial / istimewa. Baik berupa acara resmi, acara keluarga atau mungkin juga dalam aktifitas pekerjaan dimana Kita akan bertemu dengan klien baru atau klien lama yang istimewa.
